Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Promote local culture and community

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Nodar Nakani is Svaneti's tourism coordinator and, therefore, committed to promote tourism in this region. Nine years ago when Georgia was going through the dark period of civil war, he set up activities to promote tourism development in Georgia. His first step was turning his home into a guesthouse. He also encouraged and supported other Svaneti dwellers to help achieve a sustainable income from tourism.

This has not only been of financial benefit, but enabled locals and travellers alike to share and experience each other's cultures, something that Mr. Nakani is passionate about. He shares his local knowledge with guests about Georgia's rich history and museums sunk amongst the mountains, the spectacular natural environment, the amazing local hospitality, and irreplaceable cuisine.

He also provides cooking lessons in Georgian cuisine, where guests can learn to bake Svan Kubdari (bread filled with meat, Georgian spices and onions) with their own hands, keeping these important cultural recipes alive.
