Visit Captivating Svaneti

We start our tour from Tbilisi in the evening by train. We arrive to Zugdidi town, northeastern Georgia, the following day at 7:00am. Zugdidi is the administrative centre of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Region. We have a breakfast at the restaurant in the centre of the town.

Our way proceeds with minibuses from Zugdidi and we get to Becho Valley. Becho is a gorge with amazing nature. Mt. Ushba with its double peaks is towering from 4 710m over the place.

We proceed our way to Village Mazeri. It is located at 1699m altitude and offers fascinating scenery. Mazeri is closer to Mt. Ushba. We trek to the waterfall at the foothills of Ushba. After having visited the sight, we come back to Mazeri village and overnight in a local house.

First stop on the following day is Guli Glacier, located at 2900m above sea level. The route is rather long and loaded with amazing views. We spend the night in camps near the glacier.

The next day begins with trekking down to Mestia town- cultural, administrative and educational centre of Svaneti province. While walking in the streets of the town, we come across Svanetian towers. They date back to 9th to 17th century and had been built as defence towers. A typical Svan tower is narrow and consists of 4 floors. We overnight in a hotel in the centre of Mestia town. The host of the hotel is a local and will hold some cooking courses. We will try to make Svan food and bake some pastries.

Last day of our tour takes you to Mestia History and Ethnography Museum with its extraordinarily rich collection of medieval icons and artifacts of the region. This all casts a light to the local history, nature and spirit. We see the typical Svanetian house called Machubi where people and animals lived. After the museum we drive back to Zugdidi. We arrive there by 7:00pm. Night train Zugdidi-Tbilisi takes us to the capital where we arrive in the morning by 6:00am.
