Visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Duration: 8 hour(s) - Location: Mtskheta - Gori - Tbilisi

This tour takes you to Mtskheta. It was the capital of Georgia from the third century BC to the fifth century AD. It is rich in historical monuments and, therefore, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 11th century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and sixth century Jvari Monastery on site feature significant monuments of Georgian Christian architecture.

The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is known as the burial site of Christ's mantle. The vast cathedral, surrounded by a wall with gun emplacements, is one of the most venerated places of worship for Georgian Orthodox Christians.

The Jvari Monastery was built in the early fourth century when Saint Nino, who converted Georgia to Christianity, erected a cross on Mtskheta's highest mountain, where the monastery is located. From the Jvari Monastery, you can see the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers with breathtaking views.

A few minutes drive and you are near Uplistsikhe, an ancient cave complex. From the fifth century BC to the late Middle Ages, Uplistsikhe had been hewn and completed. It consists of refectories, chapels, a church, and different sections that are connected with a tunnel. The cave complex is situated on the right bank of The Mtkvari River and offers spectacular views. Uplistsikhe is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In the same area, the Joseph Stalin's House Museum is located, where memories of Stalin's life and significant events are kept. Gori is Joseph Stalin's (leader of the Soviet Union) birthplace. Here people admire Stalin and in the centre of the city there is a statue of him.
